Motorsports tend to get many prestigious brands wanting to be involved with their activities. Chopard has had a continuing relationship with “Porsche Motorsport’s World Endurance Championship Team” and their “919 Hybrid” race car. The 84th edition of the “24 Hours of Le Mans” took place last weekend (June 18th & 19th) at Circuit De La Sarthe, in Le Mans, France. So it was an opportune moment to unveil the new “Chopard Superfast Chrono Porsche 919 Black Edition”.

There have been other limited editions of this Chopard like the “919 Superfast 919 Edition” (Ref#: 168535-3002) limited to 919 pieces, as a homage to the car it was designed to honor.

But this “Black Edition” will even be scarcer than that, with only 100 pieces being produced. For those who don’t manage to find either one of these special editions, they can always opt for the “Chopard Superfast Chrono” (Ref#: 168535-3001) which is a non-limited version.

The 45mm round case is made of titanium (unlike the stainless-steel of the previous incarnation) and has undergone a bead-blasted DLC treatment, which gives this watch its black finish. There is a screw down crown and a lacquered titanium tachymeter scale secured by eight PVD-coated blackened screws. The pushers controlling the chronograph are located on the right side of the case, with the setting crown in-between. One of these pushers, the one near the 2 o’clock position is coated with red rubber (like the engine start button on a sports car) to make it stand-out from the overall black tones; as well as compliment the other red accents on the dial. Both the crown and the pushers are coated in rubber, for an enhanced grip.

A transparent exhibition caseback allows to see some of the intricacies of the inner movement. On the caseback its self has been engraved the: water-resistance limit and the expression “Limited Edition” followed by the corresponding limited series number. The sapphire crystal on the back also has the expression “Classic Racing Superfast 919” etched in white on its circling rim; while in the middle can be read: “Official Timing Partner Porsche Motorsport” and “Chopard Geneve Swiss” in red. All covered by a sapphire crystal which assists in assuring a water-resistance that can reach up to 100m (330 feet).

This black dial exhibits white Arabic numerals from 5 to 60 in five minute increments. There are three sub-dials: a 30-minute flyback counter at the 3 o’clock position; a sub-seconds chronometer at the 6 o’clock position; and a 12-hour counter at the 9 o’clock position, with a bright red and white “919” icon in its midst.

This overall black color scheme with white and red accents, adequately mimics the tones found on the new “2016 Porsche 919 Hybrid race car”. There is a date aperture located between the 4 and 5 o’clock position. And the hands and numerals have a white luminous coating, for an enhanced legibility.

The German company Porsche, once again for the 18th time overall and the 2nd time in a row has won the “24 Hours of Le Mans”, after completing 384 laps in 24 hours. Their first participation in this competition dates back to 1951 and the first victory lap would come in 1970. And towards the end of that decade and entering the 80’s would see Jacky Ickx and the Porsche 936’s joint venture provide six wins and crown Jack with the nickname: “Monsieur Le Mans”.

Last year was also a special occasion for Porsche as their 919 models took the 1st and 2nd place at this prestigious and challenging French race track.

But, this one didn’t come without some ‘tribulations’ as most of the race was led by the “Toyota Gazoo Racing Team” in a Toyota TS050 model, right up to the final three minutes! At that point the Toyota piloted by Nakajima began to lose power and their 50-second lead was outdone by Porsche, for another memorable win. Still there were frequent lead changes during the many hours the course of the race was underway and provided a thrilling spectacle.
