The “Chopard L.U.C 1860” was originally launched in 1996 which makes this it’s 20th anniversary and the reference to 1860 is an homage to the founding year of the Chopard brand. The whole L.U.C collection was conceived by the brands founder, Louis-Ulysse Chopard, to reflect the highest standards they assure can be expected from their products.

This 45mm case is made of 18k white “Fairminded” gold. And what is “Fairminded gold”? It’s a form of guaranteeing the communities that labor the mines in search of these precious metals get a “fairer compensation”. Fairminded gold as their website affirms: “…is an assurance label that certifies gold from empowered responsible artisanal and small-scale mining organizations.” The Fairminded Initiative was created by the “Alliance for Responsible Mining – (ARM)” a non-profit organization recognized as a leader and pioneer of responsible artisanal and small-scale mining. Their slogan is: “Gold To Be Proud Of”. (For more information visit their website: http://www.fairmined.org/what-is-fairmined/).

The dial’s color derives from its grey ruthenium coating and is decorated with a hand-guilloché motif which gives this watch captivating light effects. Time is indicated with Roman numerals and 18k white gold hands. From then on this watch dial optimizes as much information as it can ergonomically along the dial, without overwhelming its available space. There is a 30-minute counter with initials for the yearly months at the 3 o’clock position. A 12 hour-counter and the weekday markers at the 9 o’clock position. And a two-window aperture date under the Chopard logo, between this timepieces center and the 12 o’clock position. It also features a sub-seconds dial over the 6 o’clock position with a Moonphase in its interior.

The design of the perpetual calendar had to include a few nuanced millimeters, in order to include a day/night indicator. It also features a zero-reset system for the counters. Also around the outline where the dial face meets the bezel are red highlights at every 15 minute marker of the Arabic numerals, beginning at the 15m to the 30, 45 and finally 60 minute marker. The 12 hour-counter and 30-minute counter also feature red highlighted numerals for enhanced legibility.
