At the latest 2018 Rennsport Reunion in Laguna Seca, California, which is the world’s largest gathering of Porsche racing cars. The haute horlogerie brand Chopard adequately found this event to be the perfect moment to release a new watch with a very specific Porsche era tribute. Let’s take a look at their motor-sport themed “Chopard Mille Miglia Classic Chronograph Racing Stripes Edition”.
This festive mood Chopard has been going thru has been to celebrate their 30th anniversary with the Italian Mille Miglia race. They kicked off the festivities with a complete set of five distinctly colored limited edition watches named the “Chopard Mille Miglia Racing Colors”, which we reviewed here. These selected colors were inspired by the 1930’s tones with one assigned for each of the 5 national teams in competition: “Rosso Corsa” (red) for Italy, “Speed Silver” (grey) for Germany, “Vintage Blue” (blue) for France, “Speed Yellow” (yellow) for Belgium and “British Racing Green” for United Kingdom.
While the blue and white racing stripes seen on this newly released timepiece can have its origins traced all the way back to 1951. At that time rules set by the FIA (Fédération Internationale de L’Automobile) stipulated that all racing teams had to use colors that represent their countries. The blue and white seen on this Chopard timepiece is linked to America and specifically the millionaire automaker and pilot Briggs Cunningham who dreamt of winning the “24 Hours Of Le Mans”. Although he would go on to compete in the race, he never actually won the completion but the “Cunningham Stripes” went down in racing history.
The 42mm case is made of stainless-steel with a transparent sapphire exhibition case back, which allows to view the inner workings of the mechanical movement. A blue engraving that reads “RACING STRIPES” can be seen on the sapphire crystal.
It comes equipped with two steel push-pieces to operate the chronograph functions with a setting-crown in-between them. A race-car steering wheel can be seen crafted on to the setting-crown. All topped by a sapphire crystal that assists with water-resistance on this watch being able to reach up to 50 meters (164 feet).
Time is exhibited on a silver dial with larger hollowed-out wide printed Arabic numerals in a retro font, followed by smaller black printed second index markers, with larger minute index markers that are accompanied by two-digit Arabic numerals for every five-minute increment. A tachymeter scale can also be seen circling around the circumference flange of the dial.
There are three snailed finished sub-dials: a sub-seconds at the 3 o’clock position, a 12-hour counter at the 6 o’clock position and a 30-minute counter at the 9 o’clock position. The central sweep-seconds chronograph hand has a red tip that mimics the “Rossa Corsa” arrow-shaped Mille Miglia logo at the 12 o’clock position; while the central rhodium hands have been treated with a luminescent coating for an enhanced legibility. There is also a date aperture between the 4 and 5 o’clock positions.
