One of the most successful joint horology ventures linked to motor-sports is back again! Chopard is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Mille Miglia race, as their official timekeeper sponsor. They have opted for a more vintage-inspired look on these two new limited edition “Chopard Mille Miglia 2018 Race Edition” watches.

Back at Baselworld 2018 Chopard also released the “Mille Miglia GTS Power Control Grigio Speciale” (Ref#: 168566-3007) with a different modern approach look than we’ve grown accustomed to finding on this particular model line, as you can see and read more about here.

Now, these new 30th anniversary editions come in a 42mm case made of stainless-steel with a polished finish, while an alternate more exclusive version slightly differs by possessing an 18k rose gold setting-crown, push-pieces and bezel mounted to it. Both editions were equipped with a stepped bezel and short stubby lugs for a secured wrist fit.

Chopard has fitted theses watches with a sapphire exhibition case back, which allows to view the inner workings of the mechanical movement. They have also engraved the brand name and 30th anniversary slogan “CHOPARD & MILLE MIGLIA 30 ANNI DI PASSIONE” directly to the sapphire crystal case back; while engraved on the outer steel circumference are technical details and the limited edition number, for each of these unique timepieces.

It comes equipped with two push-pieces that activate the chronograph functions and a screw-down crown in-between them. Some unique and theme appropriate details found here are how the Chopard artisans have crafted the setting-crown to look like a petrol tank cap, plus decorating it with a steering wheel; while the chronograph pushers have been designed to resemble the engine pistons of an automobile.

It all comes topped by a sapphire crystal that assists with water-resistance on this watch being able to reach up to 50 meters (164 feet).

Time is exhibited on an anthracite dial with silver-toned colored Arabic numerals, while a rail-road motif ring of minute index markers circles around with two-digit numbers for every five-minute increment. Also on the outer rim of the dial is a tachymeter scale.

There are three azure silver-toned colored sub-dials: a sub-seconds at the 3 o’clock position; a 12-hour counter at the 6 o’clock position and a 30-minute counter at the 9 o’clock position. The overall design of this dial was made to be reminiscent of the dashboard instruments found on vintage cars, which could have been seen competing at a Mille Miglia race dating back to the 1930’s.

The central stainless-steel or 18k rose gold hands (depending on which version) and applied Arabic numerals have all been fitted with a luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility. While a bit of red can be seen in the form of the “1000 MIGLIA” logo and on the tip of the thin central chronograph hand. There is also a date aperture between the 4 and 5 o’clock positions.
Chopard Mille Miglia 2018 Race Edition
These “Chopard Mille Miglia 2018 Race Edition” (References below) are powered by a self-winding mechanical movement, caliber ETA-2859 with a Dubois-Depraz module, 37 jewels and 28,800 Vph. This movement can handle steady oscillations in rate, with a variation factor of +4/-6 seconds per day. Power reserve on this watch can last up to 42 hours, when fully wound.

Mounted to the watch is a black perforated calfskin strap with a rubber underside, exposed contrasting red stitching and Dunlop tire tread motifs, while both are secured to the wrist by a polished steel pin buckle.
As aforementioned these are limited edition watches with only 1,000 manufactured pieces for the stainless-steel version and 100 pieces for the more exclusive two-tone version. For more up to date information visit the official Chopard website here.
