COVER-Chopard-LUC-XPS QP-fairmined-2019

Chopard returns to market with one of their most celebrated and best-selling models. We’re referring to the “L.U.C” that also feature the in-house mechanical movement bearing the same name. More specifically they have released the “Chopard L.U.C XPS Twist QF” crafted out of their “Fairmined” 18k white gold.

This is not the first time that Chopard has crafted a timepiece out of the ethically certified “Fairmined” gold. We have previously written about the “Chopard L.U.C XPS Twist QF” (Ref#: 161945-5001) made of 18k rose gold released in 2017, which you can read more about here. But, for those out of the loop the “Fairmined Project” initiative aims at supporting the local miners who extract these precious minerals, by certifying they are paid a decent wage for their labor and a premium price for these goods.

While Chopard been using Fairmined gold since 2014, but the company has taken this ethically approach all the way by announcing in 2018 that it would use Fairmined gold exclusively for all its watch and jewelry collections. The 40mm case is made of “Fairmined” 18k white gold with a sapphire exhibition case back, which allows to view the inner workings of the mechanical movement that feature a 22k gold winding micro-rotor and bridges adorned with Côtes de Genève motif.

Mounted to the case is a polished bezel that provide a subtle contrast to the vertical satin-brushed flanks and horn spaces. The slightly curved lugs provide an extra comfortable fit to the wrist.

It also comes equipped with a “Fairmined” 18k white gold off-set crown that has been placed at the 4 o’clock position. The result of this unusual position that consequentially causes the sub-seconds to appear at the 7 o’clock position is the reason why this model line was named “Twist. All covered by a sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating. Water-resistance on this watch is able to reach up to 30 meters (98 feet).

Time is exhibited on a blue-grey hued dial that has undergone a galvanic treatment with a satin-brushed sunburst motif, centered on the small seconds sub-dial. Circling the dial are rhodium-plated hour index markers, plus an off-set sub-seconds dial can be seen at the 7 o’clock position. The central hour, minutes and sub-seconds hands have all rhodium-plated Dauphine fuseé-type hands with differing sizes. There is also a date aperture at the 3 o’clock position.
