Most of us hear Wakmann and we say oh yes. A Wakmann. But once we hear Breitling it usually sparks a new flare of interest.
On the face of the watch it only says Wakmann Automatic . There is no mention of Breitling, just the information from the tachymeter, the days of the week, and the date window, and the hands of the watch. Six hands to be exact. Two hands to tell conventional time, two orange hands reflect the stopwatch features, there is an orange cumulative time counter in a sub-dial at six o’clock, letting you know the watch can time a 12 hour race and at nine o’clock, we have the seconds hand. I’ve been wearing the Panerai Radiomir 1936 PAM 249 for two days now. It’s a watch that commands attention immediately in a simple but robust way. The matte California dial is plain and subtle, the hands are edged in blue steel, and are equally inconspicuous and the hours on the dial are sunfaded Roman numerals. Christmas is by far one of the most revered and anticipated holidays of our calendar year. Some enjoy the chance to be surrounded by their family and loved ones, while others get off on the expectation of certain gifts. It’s common knowledge that many young men and women volunteer and enlist in the US Armed Forces every year. Giving up many of the liberties bestowed upon the civilians that they’re fighting to preserve. Another common knowledge many try to forget, or shy away from, is that many soldiers return missing more than just the time spent in battle. “Daylight-savings-time” aka “summertime” is the custom (reinforced by law in many countries) of advancing clocks during summer months by one hour, in order to have an extra hour of evening daylight, while cutting away from the morning by delaying sunrise by an hour. Just to dial all clocks an hour back with the coming of winter and the shortening of days. Which brings us full-circle to “daylight-savings-time” aka “fall back or wintertime” occurring on November 1st , where we reach 2:00AM and put time back to place by setting time an hour back to 1:00AM. Hemingway loved his boat, the Pilar. I think I can say he spent about as much time on it as in his villa in Cuba, Finca Vigia. Where he wrote the amazing books Islands in the Stream and the Old Man and the Sea. But it was on the Pilar that the real life action really happened, going far out to sea to hunt Marlin and Tuna, and other big game fish. The Pilar provided the inspiration. It’s a grey morning and I have already taken the dog out for a long walk. It was early in the day and there was a light mist hanging over the park, and as we walked, I noticed that the leaves had already begun to turn and fall off the big trees.
