It was only just last year that SIHH 2017 that Cartier first present their extra-flat model. And yet a year since then, they return with enhancements to this watch set move, introducing the new ”Cartier Drive de Cartier Extra-Flat” recently revealed at SIHH 2018.

Many had already been swift to crown the “Drive de Cartier Extra-Flat” as a certified crowd pleaser. They were made available in 18k white gold and rose gold versions, which are great materials, but something seemed to be missing. Normally a collection such as this one, would have begun with stainless-steel and yellow gold. But, Cartier seems to have inverted the process here, in what might have actually been a good marketing strategy. No doubt many customers were hoping and have gotten their wishes answered by these new release options.

So, as aforementioned the cushion-shaped 38mm case is now available in either stainless-steel or 18k yellow gold with a solid case back. But its thickness of only 6.6mm which justify the “Extra-Flat” moniker, along with its wide arched and short lugs that provide for a very closely integrated wrist fit. And the proportions of the case are actually slightly skewed at 38mm high and 39mm wide. Creating a visual effect that just keep one staring at its apparent simplicity, unaware of why exactly is it so appealing.

Also features its standard smoothed out and curved octagonal bezel matching each versions metal casing with a setting-crown that includes a faceted sapphire. The bezel here and the top of the lugs have a polished finish, while the brushed sides provide a subtle contrasting effect. It’s all these details put together that result in making an otherwise simple design, in something quite remarkable, while understated. Water-resistance on this watch can reach up to 30 meters (98 feet).

Time is exhibited on a silver dial with a sunray effect and Roman numerals, while an inner ring form with small minute index markers and slightly bigger ones for each five-minute increment. Comes equipped with the classic blued sword-shaped steel hands seen on many of the timepieces created by Cartier. Simple, clean and elegant. A true modern day classic design making the old adage of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”, ring as true as ever.
