Breitling has just released a new “SuperOcean” model to celebrate the brand’s partnership with the sustainable clothing company “Outerknown”, which has been committed to improving environmental conditions for the entire planet. They have crafted the first ever strap made by recycled material that Breitling has incorporated to their catalog in this newly released “Breitling Superocean Héritage II Chronograph 44 Outerknown”.
The watch community at large has been closely following CEO Georges Kern moves in Breitling, since he took over the helm of that operation and left behind IWC Schaffhausen. Most of the recent watch releases under his reign have been characterized by reviving classic elements with subtle modern modification, but this new release is a proper sports watch with an ecological theme. That celebrate the passion of a trio of brand ambassadors for Breitling known as the “Surfer Squad”, which included the Australian surfers Stephanie Gilmore and Sally Fitzgibbons; plus the 11-time World Surf League Champion: Kelly Slater.

This newly appointed American sports icon for brand ambassador was a wise choice by Breitling that has brought on more goods. Kelly Slater is into more than just surfing and along with the accomplished menswear designer John Moore, they have created the “Outerknown” brand. This company since its inception has been committed to ocean protection by specializing in the manufacture of environmental friendly products.
They have mainly used recycled materials such as fishing nets and old nylon surplus to create products like: flannel shirts, shorts, Levi’s jackets and now even this novel Breitling watch strap. This is not a novelty in the horology market, but it is the first time that Breitling has issued recycled materials with one of their timepieces.

The 44mm case is made of black steel with a screw-down case back that features an engraving of the “Outerknown” logo. Mounted to the case is a black scratch and shock resistant unidirectional ceramic bezel with a luminescent central dot at the 12 o’clock position.
It also comes equipped with two push-pieces to operate the chronograph functions, plus a screw-in setting-crown placed between them. All topped by a cambered sapphire that has been glare-proofed on both sides, which assists with water-resistance on this watch being able to reach up to 200 meters (660 feet).
Time is exhibited on a blue dial with metal applique hour index markers, followed by smaller white printed minute index markers with round markers for every five-minute increment. There are three sub-dials: a 12-hour counter at the 6 o’clock position, a sub-seconds at the 9 o’clock position and a 30-minute counter at the 12 o’clock position.
There is also a double window aperture with the day and date at the 3 o’clock position. It features a matte gray “SuperOcean” inscription and white “CHRONOMETER” inscription underneath the aforementioned day-date windows; while the Breitling logo is above it. The sword shaped minute hand and the arrow shaped hour hand, plus the round hour markers on the dials flange have all been given a luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility.
