Breitling is celebrating a new partnership with IRONMAN. But, we’re not talking about the Marvel super-hero, although many of the individuals involved can be perceived as “heroes” as well. This alliance has been made with the “IRONMAN” corporation that is responsible for organizing and operating famous worldwide events, such as the “IRONMAN Triathlon Series”. In order to officially mark the occasion Breitling will be releasing the limited edition “Breitling Superocean 44 IRONMAN”.

The IRONMAN competitions began back in 1978 and was held in Oahu, Hawaii until the race moved to Kalilua-Kona in 1981, where it is has been held to this day. At its inception prior to racing each athlete was given three sheets of paper: one listing the rules, a course description, plus a final handwritten page with the exhortation: “Swim 2.4 miles! Bike 112 miles! Run 26.2 miles! Brag for the rest of your life!” which has since then become a registered trademark.
Fun fact: the Wanda Sports Group, which is the parent company that owns WTC (World Triathlon Corporation) and therefor the “IRONMAN” brand does pay royalties to “Marvel Entertainment” for use of the Ironman brand. The marvel character known as “Iron Man” first appeared in 1963, whereas the first IRONMAN triathlon race only took place in 1978.
The 44mm case is made of stainless-steel with a solid screw-on case back. Engraved on the center of the flip-side is the IRONMAN triathlon logo and the inscription “ONE OF 300” referencing the limited edition status of these timepieces, while circling around we can read technical details.
Mounted to the case is a ratcheted unidirectional rotating steel bezel, which can be used to track the elapsed time for underwater diving, or tracking laps, etc.
It comes equipped with a screw-locked setting-crown that includes two gaskets to reinforce this watches water-resistance. All topped by a cambered sapphire crystal glare-proofed for both sides. Water-resistance on this watch can last up to 1,000 meters (3,300 feet).
Time is exhibited on a black dial with white hour index markers and the Arabic numerals: 6, 9 and 12. The IRONMAN logo has been aligned with the 3 o’clock position.
The central steel hands, hour index markers and Arabic numerals have all been fitted with a luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility. Its seconds hand was also given a red-tip with a small luminescent triangle that colorfully evokes the IRONMAN logo and pairs well with the re strap.
