A newly formed partnership between Breitling and the esteemed British motorcycle manufacturer Norton, has led to a quite appealing retro vintage-style timepiece. The use of alternate fonts for the numerals, an overall dark color-scheme and a “rough” looking raw-leather strap have given this traditional “Premier” dress-watch model, a much more sporty-vibe. Norton has even developed a special limited-edition motorcycle to celebrate this joint venture.
The Norton brand for those who appreciate two-wheelers is known for high-performance motorcycles worldwide. Breitling CEO Georges Kern says their brand has striking parallels with Norton Motorcycles: “Breitling and Norton are both innovative and entrepreneurial and have powerful legacies. This new watch honors the great partnership between these two aspirational brands.”
Stuart Garner, CEO of Norton, agrees: “Breitling’s new premier Norton Edition incorporates DNA elements from both brands, offering wristwatch and motorcycle fans the opportunity to express their individuality, and perfectly embodies the nature of our brands.”
This partnership has even led to Norton Motorcycles developing the “Commando 961 Café Racer MKII Breitling Limited Edition”. It has been designed to recall the classic appearance and style of the great old style café racer bikes, while offering modern state-of-the-art components and engineering. Its 961 cc engine was developed in-house by Norton and delivers the performance you’d expect from one of the world’s greatest motorcycle brands.
It is distinguished by a vintage Breitling “B” engraved on the clutch box, Breitling-designed speedometer and tachometer dials, and a black-on-black vintage “B” stitched into the saddle.
This elegant retro-style statement-making motorcycle is an appropriate creation to celebrate the collaboration between these luxury brands. It will be available in a limited edition of only 77 manufactured motorcycles, which you can learn more about through Norton’s distribution network here.
As for the watch its 42mm case is made of stainless-steel with a screwed-on sapphire crystal exhibition case back, which allows to view the inner workings of the mechanical movement. It comes equipped with two smooth rectangular push-pieces to operate the chronograph functions. Between them is a non-screw-locked setting-crown that comes reinforced by two gaskets and features a riveted circumference providing a better grip. The crystal has also been engraved with a silhouette of the motorcycle and the brands “NORTON” logo.
Another special themed element on this watch is the additional Norton nameplate mounted on the side of the dial. The central gold hands have been given a luminescent filling, for an enhanced legibility. All topped by a convex sapphire glass with a double anti-reflective glareproofed coating on both sides. Water-resistance on this watch can reach up to 100 meters (330 feet).
Time is exhibited on an overall black dial with gold out-lined Arabic numerals with a retro stencil style-look, followed by a series of small white printed white minute index markers, with slightly thicker markings for each five-minute increment. Further-out circling the periphery of the dial is a silver tachymeter scale, with black printed numerals and the “TACHYMETER” inscription highlighted in a red font.
There are also silver sub-dials contrasting with the black backdrop: a 30-minute counter at the 3 o’clock position; and a sub-seconds at the 9 o’clock position. The central gold hour, minutes’ hands have been fitted with a luminescent filling, for an enhanced legibility.
