Baselworld 2019 is about to begin and we’ve already got some glimpses of what’s to come. Breitling has been focused on their back catalog lately, which has led to some interesting re-issues. Among these new retro-releases is a faithful replica of a circa 1959 timepiece. Let’s savor the nostalgia evoking “Breitling Navitimer ref 806 1959 Re-Edition”.
For all those Navitimer aficionados that already own a modern edition, but were seeking something more unique with historic elements this may be it. Especially for pilots, fans of aviation or history buffs this new Breitling offers the opportunity to seize a very faithfully recreated retro-timepiece.

The 40.9mm case is made of stainless-steel with a solid case back. Mounted to the case is a bi-directional bezel with a “bead of rice” edge made up off 94 bead, just as the original model featured; although the number of beads did vary along the several years the original watch was in production.
It comes equipped with two push-pieces to activate the chronograph functions with a setting-crown in-between them. The faceted lugs on this watch provide a very accommodating wrist fit. Unlike the original this updated version has been crafted to provide a water-resistance that can reach up to 30 meters (98 feet).
All topped by a domed hesalite crystal, once more staying faithful to the original timepiece it has recreated, instead of using the current industry standard of sapphire crystals.
Time is exhibited on a glossy black finish dial with beige-hue Arabic numerals, excluding 3, 6 and 9 for sub-dials. The dial also features several informational rings as it edges out towards its inner flange: first a ring of white printed minute index markers with numerals for every 5-minute increment; followed by a time ring clocking in from 1:10 to 9:00 MPH (Miles Per Hour); then a ring half made up of kilometers, while the other half contains Nautical STATS; and finally we reach the edge with a white ring that holds a black printed 60-minute scale.
The winged shield at 12 o’clock is the AOPA (Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association) logo, but without the “AOPA” initials in its midst. This is because only watches destined for the America market, which is the home of the AOPA were featured with its complete insignia, while watches on Europe excluded it as seen on this re-edition.
There are three sub-dials: a 30-minute counter at the 3 o’clock position; a 12-hour counter at the 6 o’clock position; and a sub-seconds counter at the 9 o’clock position. The central syringe-style hours, minutes hands and Arabic numerals have all been coated with an ivory-tone Super-Luminova coating, for an enhanced legibility.
Breitling Navitimer Ref.806 1959 Re-Edition
The “Breitling Navitimer ref 806 1959 Re-Edition” (Ref#: AB0910371B1X1) is powered by a hand-wound in-house mechanical movement, caliber B09 with 39 jewels and 28,800 vph. Power reserve on this watch can last up to 70 hours, when fully wound.
The original Ref. 809 of 1959 was powered by a caliber Venus 178, while earlier versions circa 1954 and 1955 were equipped with a Valjoux 72. So, the movement we have here is actually an upgrade from the original calibers, which has been based on the Breitling in-house and automatic caliber B01. This is a limited edition of only 1,959 manufactured pieces. It should become available in late April or May 2019. For more up to date information visit the official Breitling website here.
