With Baselworld 2016 currently underway many brands are making the move to impress and conquer market space. And Breitling is making a big moment out of this horology fair by releasing a 50mm watch. As well as introducing some brand new patented materials and neologisms (such as “Breitlight”) to further enhance and distinguish their brand from other competitors. Introducing the “Breitling Avenger Hurricane”.

The 50mm case may be a big size, but it actually weighs less than smaller diameter timepieces by Breitling. The reason for such lightness stems from the materials used, which Breitling immediately made clear was not carbon fiber. In fact what’s at work here is a completely new and Breitling exclusive case material, they’ve chosen to name: “Breitlight”. It’s a lightweight high-tech polymer that has been filled with composite fibers for strength and robustness. This material is three times lighter than titanium and close to six times lighter than steel.

And the positive aspects of this new “Breitlight” material isn’t only confined to its weight ratio. This composite is also naturally anti-magnetic, anti-allergic, provides thermal-stability and has a high resistance towards: traction, corrosion and scratches. The case also features a rotating unidirectional diver-type bezel with rider tabs for memorizing time intervals. Push-pieces and the knurled screw-down crown are also fitted with a checkerboard pattern non-slip grip ensuring enhanced tactility, even while wearing gloves. All topped off by an extra-thick sapphire crystal glare-proofed on both sides, which assists in keeping this timepiece water-resistant up to 100 meters (330 feet).

The volcano black dial exhibits a unique 24-hour display, with white stenciled Arabic numerals and some yellowish-orange accents, contrasting with the overall darkness. The hands and numerals have undergone a superluminova coating for enhanced legibility. The Breitling brand is synonymous with aviation, which goes well with the Military-inspired aesthetics found on this timepiece. There are three sub-dials, on this 24-hour display: a 30-minute counter at the 6 o’clock position; a 12-hour counter at the 12 o’clock position and a sub-seconds at the 18 o’clock position. Also feature a date aperture at the 9 o’clock position.
