Blog-Breitling-Yellow

It seems Breitling has taken a distinctive design direction with their most recent releases. Besides the use of black-steel materials, they have been contrasting it with very bright and warm colors, like orange and yellow. This time around it comes in the form of a limited edition timepiece, the “Breitling Chronomat 44 Blacksteel Special Edition”.

Earlier at Baselworld 2016 we had seen Breitling reintroduce one of their flagship models, the “Chronomat 44” in a blacksteel version. A watch first produced in 1941 and essentially based on military themes. But, with some added twists, like the utilized case material and the square sub-dials reminiscent of aviation.

The black and yellow color scheme creates a very contrasting effect and brings to mind the hit song “Black and Yellow” by Wiz Khalifa, though no endorsement is in place. And just for curiosity’s sake, the song is actually referring to the colors of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and their NFL team, the Pittsburgh Steelers. But, it could synch up well with this limited edition Breitling.

The 44mm case is made of black steel with ratcheted pushers and a bidirectional rotating bezel that contains a slide rule. The crown is non screw-locked but features two gaskets to reinforce water-resistance. It’s all further reinforced by being topped off by a cambered sapphire crystal, glareproofed on both sides. The transparent caseback allows to view the inner working of the movement, with its column wheel chronograph, auto-centering reset hammers and other moving parts.

Time is exhibited on a bright yellow dial with steel applied hour index markers and black sub-dials. This unique yellow is similar to the color applied on some of their other models, like the “Breitling Avenger II Seawolf”. There is a black date window, between the 4 and 5 o’clock position.  The sub-dials here are once again round and are composed of a: 30-minute counter at the 3 o’clock position, 12-hour counter at the 6 o’clock position and a sub-seconds at the 9 o’clock position.
