Back in the 1940’s during World War II, Britain in their effort to fight back against the invading forces effectively had to think out of the box. It was amidst this conflict that they would develop the British aircraft whose lightweight wooden construction would make it one of the fastest planes in the skies during World War II. This aircraft was called “De Havilland Mosquito”, but would also gain the moniker “Wooden Wonder” and is now being honored in the form of a Breitling timepiece.

The 43mm case is made of stainless-steel, with a matching solid steel case back. Mounted to the case is a satin-brushed ADLC-coated stainless-steel bi-directional bezel engraved with a red pointer, plus white numerals and indices.

It comes equipped with two push-pieces that operate the chronograph functions, with a screw-locked setting-crown in-between them, which is reinforced by two gaskets. All topped by a cambered sapphire crystal that’s been glare-proofed on both sides. Water-resistance on this watch can reach up to 100 meters (330 feet).

Time is exhibited on a black dial with white Arabic numerals, set beside smaller numerals for every 5-minute increment. There is also a railroad-motif ring of minute/seconds index markers circling the periphery of the dial, with small patina colored triangles aligned to each hour marker.

It also features a chronograph function with three contrasting white colored sub-dials: a 30-minute counter at the 3 o’clock position; a 12-hour counter aligned with the 6 o’clock spot; and a sub-seconds at 9 o’clock. Some elements of the sub-dials have been highlighted with red elements, match the central hands and the bezel arrow marker. The stainless-steel central hour/minute sword-style hands and Arabic numerals have all been fitted with a luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility.Breitling-14_alistair-hodgson-the-curator-of-the-de-havilland-aircraft-museum-explaining-the-use-of-a-plywood-and-balsa-wood-composite
