Earlier this year at Baselworld 2017 Breitling unveiled a huge 50mm case made from their proprietary “Breitlight” material, on a new “Hurricane” model. It seems it was just too big for some and now returns with a smaller diameter.
The 45mm case is a much welcomed version, for those who haven’t worked out enough to develop Dwayne Johnson size wrists and wear the previous 50mm model. And just like the previous model this one has also been constructed out of the patented “Breitlight” material patented by Breitling. It consists of a lightweight high-tech polymer that’s been filled with composite fibers for strength. Another beneficial quality of this material derives from being naturally anti-magnetic and anti-allergic.
On the right side of the case are two push-pieces to operate the chronograph functions, with a screw-down crown in between them. The case has been made with a solid screwed on case back. Also includes a “Breitlight” unidirectional rotating diver-type bezel with rider tabs for memorizing time intervals and engraved Arabic numerals for every 5 minute increments. Topped by a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with anti-reflective glare on both sides. Water-resistance on this watch can reach up to 100 meters (330 feet).
Time is exhibited on either a Breitling: cobra yellow or volcano black dial with white stencil-style Arabic numerals. A ring of smaller black minute index markers can be seen circling around the dial. Although previous editions to this model line had a “military time” 24-hour scale, this new version has opted for the 12-hour scale.
There are three sub-dials: a 30-minute counter at the 3 o’clock position, a 12-hour counter at the 6 o’clock position and a sub-seconds at the 9 o’clock. The hands and Arabic numerals have all undergone a luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility. There is also a date aperture between the 4 and 5 o’clock positions. In essence the design of this model hasn’t altered much, besides the smaller casing.
For those who have been hitting the gym or simply prefer the bigger sized timepieces, the previous “Avenger Hurricane” with the 50mm case and 24-hour time scale is still available. But, now for the majority of us who aren’t all equipped with plus size limbs, Breitling has made this option available. A move that will be highly appreciated by those who had felt like they were missing out till now.
