Just before Baselworld 2018 began Breitling ushered out a new “Chronomat 44” returning this model to its more utilitarian aesthetics. A more efficient dial design, made possible partially by opting for the in-house B01 caliber.

After the new CEO Georges Kern introduced the “Breitling Navitimer 8”, which we discussed here at the time. Now he’s moved right along to re-purpose their present and future “Chronomat 44’. A model regularly linked to sporting feats and overcoming personal odds and records.
In the past we’ve reviewed other 44mm options by Breitling, but this was before the new reign that has just begun with ex-IWC Georges Kern, now ahead of current and future Breitling productions, had begun. Watches we covered in that past include the: “Breitling Chronomat 44 Blacksteel Special Edition” (MB111|I531|262S|M20DSA.2) with the bright cobra yellow colored dial and also equipped with the in-house B01 caliber movement, which was released at Baselworld 2016 and you can read more about here.
We also covered the “Breitling Chronomat 44 Blacksteel” (MB0111C3/BE35/253S/M20DSA.2) with square printed sub-dials on an overall black color-scheme with some red-highlights. This was also another Baselworld 2016 release you can get more info about here.
Both new models are in a 44mm case made of stainless-steel with a satin-brushed finish and a screwed-in case back. Mounted to the case is a steel or 18k ratcheted unidirectional bezel with unnumbered index markers. There are two push-pieces on the right side of the case to activate the chronograph functions with a simple squeeze.
Also comes equipped with a screw-locked crown with two gaskets that assist with water-resistance reaching up to 500 meters (1,650 feet), more than an adequate depth for any professional diver. All topped by a cambered sapphire crystal glare-proofed on both sides.
Time is exhibited on either a grey or blue dial with stainless-steel applied hour index markers, followed by white printed minute index markers. An outer black ring circles the dial near the bezel with a tachymeter scale printed in white, except the word “TACHYMETER” in red.
There are three sub-dials: a 30-minute counter at the 3 o’clock positon, a 12-hour counter at the 6 o’clock position and a sub-seconds at the 9 o’clock position. The central stainless-steel hands and small squares on the stainless steel applied hour index markers have been given a luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility. Also includes a date aperture between the 4 and 6 o’clock positions.
