At Baselworld 2018 Breguet presented a new-look for their “Marine” model line. Since then they have been introducing us to versions with ever increasing complications. The latest edition comes in three different options with an alarm mechanism and a second time-zone. Let’s take a closer look at the “Breguet Marine Alarme Musicale 5547”.
It’s not the first time that Breguet has ventured into the alarm-watch arena. One of their most impressive “musical” releases came in the form of the “Le Réveil du Tsar 5707”, which featured a patented column-wheel mechanism that could lock or activate the alarm, besides the handy ability to co-ordinate the alarm with local time. But, it’s been fifteen years since that 2003 release caught our ear. So, this new release

This new alarm watch by Breguet comes in a 40mm case available in either: in 18k white gold, 18k rose gold or titanium; all with a sapphire-crystal exhibition case back that allow to view the inner workings of the mechanical movement. These 13.05mm thick cases come decorated with a fluted case band.
It is also equipped with a setting-crown at the 5 o’clock position; while the alarm is wound and set by the crown at the 4 o’clock position; and turning the alarm on or off can be achieved via the pusher at the 8 o’clock position. All topped by a sapphire crystal that assists with water-resistance on this watch being able to reach up to 50 meters (164 feet).
Time is exhibited on three distinct dial options: a sunburst grey (titanium), guilloché blue (white gold) or guilloché silver (rose gold); all of them bearing Roman numerals, with small dotted minute index markers circling the flange that have slightly larger index markers for every five-minute increment. The blue and silver guilloché dial feature the same engine turned “wave” pattern found on the previously reviewed “Breguet 5517 Marine Collection” you can read more about here.
There are two sub-dials: a large 12-hour counter at the 3 o’clock position and a smaller 24-hour second time-zone sub-dial at the nine o’clock position. All dials are equipped with the faceted Breguet central hands made of the matching material of each corresponding case version; plus the thinner central seconds hand is counter-weighted by a “B” made to mimic the maritime signal flag. The central hands and Roman numerals have also all been fitted with a luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility.
A subtle power reserve indicator has been spread out between the 9 and 12 o’clock position. Highlighting this complication are diamond-shaped indicators: a colored-in diamond for a “full” indication at the 9 o’clock position, followed by a half-colored diamond at the 10 o’clock position and an outlined diamond for an “empty” indication at the 11 o’clock position.
Last but not least is an aperture opening underneath the Breguet logo, towards the central of the dial aligned with the 12 o’clock position that exhibits a “bell” indicating a set or non-set alarm. There is also a date aperture is also visible at the 6 o’clock position.
