Abraham-Louis Breguet was one of the most essential watchmakers of his day and his legacy has endured through time. On October 27th, 1815, he was chosen to make chronometers for the French Royal Navy by King Louis XVIII. To commemorate the 200th anniversary of that alliance Breguet has chosen to issue a new chronograph as a celebration, introducing the: Breguet Marine 5823.

This contemporary timepiece lends a homage to an era in which marine chronometers were essential to navigate ships through the sea and not get off course. In the day’s way before GPS navigation was even something plausible, let alone doable. Breguet designed these chronometers that were mounted on mahogany or walnut boxes, with a gimbal suspension system to keep the timepieces level at all times and help guide the way through the currents and tides.

The Breguet Marine has a 42mm platinum case with a fixed bezel, flat push-pieces and a fluted crown with a relief engraving of the Breguet logo. The lugs maintain the characteristics of the Breguet Marine collection by being welded with functional screwed bars. And the caseback is skillfully fluted with a transparent sapphire crystal which allows to observe the watches movement. As a marine watch, water resistance was a detail in mind and the timepiece was a given a: diamond-pattern rubber strap with a platinum buckle and is 100m (330 feet) water resistant.

The gold dial has a matte black finish, with a peculiar wave pattern on the outer ring and the center, highlighting the guilloche work, one of Breguet’s specialties. On the top of the outer ring are hand-applied diamond-shaped hour indexes, with white luminescent for night-time legibility. There is a centralized chronograph with second and minute hands. The small sub-dial positioned at the 9 o’clock position indicates the seconds of the running time and the sub-dial at the 6 o’clock position is the hour of the chronograph. There’s also a date aperture at the 6 o’clock positon. All the hands are 18k white gold and though there are many silver circular shapes and details, the watch has an accessible legibility.
