For 2018 Breguet is giving their “Marine Collection” an updated look to diversify its market base. These new offerings even include a titanium version with the sports market in mind. It continues to preserve several of the respected Breguet markings, but it has also widen the palate. Introducing three new versions of the “Breguet 5517 Marine”.
These watches were released in Baselworld 2018 along with other novel pieces, like the: “Breguet Classique Tourbillon Extra-Plat Automatique” (Ref#: 5367) that was made available in 18k rose gold or platinum with a “Grande Feu” enamel dial, which you can read more about here.
Or if you’d like to see an older version of the “Marine collection” equipped with a tourbillon movement, take a look at the “Breguet Marine Equation Marchante 5887” that also featured a dial bearing the same engine-turned “wave” pattern found on these new releases, as you can see and read up on here.
So, these new “Marine Collection” models come in a 40mm case available in three distinctive materials: 18k white gold, 18k rose gold and titanium; while all come with a transparent sapphire exhibition case back, which allows to view the inner workings of the mechanical movement.
An appealing reworked fluting pattern can be seen alongside the watches caseband. The titanium option offers the most lightness, as well as resistance to salty air and corrosion. These models feature a new distinctive bracelet lug with a rounded ending that provides a comfortable wrist fit.
It comes equipped with a setting-crown that is surrounded by a wave décor of crown protectors and has been adorned with a large “B” engraving for Breguet on it. All topped by a sapphire crystal that assists with water-resistance on this watch reaching up to 100 meters (330 feet).
Time is exhibited on a blue dial (on the white gold), a silver dial (on the rose gold) or a sunburst slate grey dial (on the titanium version). In common all versions have Roman numerals, followed by a ring of white printed dots for minute index markers, with larger markers for every 5-minute increment. The blue and silver dials also have the same engine-turned “wave: pattern motif in the center of the dial.
While the slate grey dial has the aforementioned sunburst finish running over the whole dial, without a distinctive contrasting center like the other two models have.
All are equipped with the faceted Breguet central hands made of the matching material of each respective case version, plus the central seconds hand bears a “B” made to mimic the maritime signal flag. The central hands and Roman numerals have all been fitted with a luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility. There is also a date aperture at the 3 o’clock position.
Breguet 5517 Marine Collection
These “Breguet 5517 Marine Collection” models (References below) are powered by a self-winding mechanical movement, caliber 777A with 26 jewels, 15 lignes and 28,800 Vph. Equipped with a rotor designed to resemble a ship’s wheel, an inverted in-line lever escapement and a silicon balance spring. Following the “marine” motif the bridges have also been engine-turned and decorated with thick stripes that resemble the planks on a ship’s decking. Power reserve on this watch can last up to 55 hours when fully wound.
Mounted to the watches is either an alligator leather strap in brown or blue (depending on the selected version); or, a rubber strap in black or grey (depending on the selected version); all secured to the wrist by a deployment buckle (matching the material of each casing option).
