A timepiece synonymous with diving, since its inception back in 1953 by Blancpain returns to market with a new alloy option. The “Fifty Fathoms” originally announced as the first modern diver watch capable of an impressive water-resistance of up to 1000 feet. This novel release presents us with the classic “Fifty Fathoms” crafted in titanium for the first time ever.

Not that far back we covered the “Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Ocean Commitment III” (Ref#: 50008-11B40-52A). It was a limited edition piece that Blancpain released to create public awareness towards the preservation and protection of the world’s ocean. This is all part of the noteworthy “Blancpain Ocean Commitment” initiative that they have dedicated an independent website to inform the masses with, which you can visit here. Visitors can follow and endorse on-going activities, while also accessing unique visuals of the deep seas. For more information about this noble cause visit our previous blog entry here.

Now for 2019 the “Fifty Fathoms” returns in the 45mm case version, but in the aforementioned titanium alloy with a brushed finish. On the flipside we have a transparent sapphire exhibition case back, which allows to view all of the inner workings of the mechanical movement. This titanium option provides a great option for those who like the larger sized watches, but appreciate a lighter wrist wear.

Mounted to the case is a ratcheted uni-directional bezel, fitted with a domed back sapphire crystal insert engraved with a 60-minute scale. It also comes equipped with a setting-crown, plus on the left-side rim of the case they have engraved “BLANCPAIN” in a bold font. All topped by a sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating on both sides. Water-resistance on this watch is able to reach up to 300 meters (1000 feet), which as aforementioned when first release back in the 1950’s elevated this timepiece to the status of the “original modern divers” watch.

Time is exhibited on a black opaline dial with a sunburst finish. It features silver-colored applied hour index markers and the Arabic numerals: 3, 6, 9 and 12; while also being followed by small white printed minute index markers, circling the inner flange.

The central hands, Arabic numerals, hour index markers, as well as the bezel inserts have all undergone a luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility. While the thin central seconds hand has been given a red arrow tip, providing a refreshing highlight to the overall dark color theme of this timepiece. There is all a date aperture between the 4 and 5 o’clock positions.
