In the latest Bell & Ross creation for Baselworld 2019 they have looked passed the cockpit instrumentation to seek out inspiration elsewhere. Their search landed on the US Air Force’s groundbreaking icon of pilot apparel, the MA-1 flight jacket. The “BR 03-92 MA-1” watch has been designed to pay tribute to the US Air Force’s now-legendary MA-1 “bomber” jacket.
Since 2005, Bell & Ross has boosted its reputation for high-altitude performance by crafting the watches in their “Instruments collection” as cockpit read-outs: square, utilitarian and rugged in design. But, there are many other elements to be found inside a cockpit besides the instruments.
This line of thinking is what led Bell & Ross to opt for a “pilot’s flight jacket” to inspire one of their Baselworld 2019 editions. The emergence of the military’s Jet Age in the 1950’s would lead to the introduction of the iconic MA-1 jacket. Its orange flipside originally served as a lifesaving tool, which could highlight and assist in locating a fallen pilot’s whereabouts. But, this versatile jacket would also go on to have a resurgence in the 1970’s and become a fashionable color scheme that can still be seen today.
The 42mm case is made of matt khaki ceramic and shaped in the iconic Bell & Ross circle on a square with exposed screws. The solid screwed-on case back has been engraved with technical information and the unique number for each of these limited edition pieces.
It comes equipped with a setting-crown that has a riveted circumference, for an enhanced grip. The crown has also been embossed with the ampersand (&) logo for “Bell & Ross”. All topped by a sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating, which also assists with water-resistance on this watch being able to reach up to 100 meters (330 feet).
Time is exhibited on two overlapping inserts formed by two superimposing metal plates with a sandwich construction. The upper section is cut away around the stenciled Arabic numerals 3, 6, 9, 12 and the hour index markers, revealing the orange luminescent coating beneath, covering the lower plate.
The orange and khaki color combination has always represented a military theme. Dark green provides the wearer with camouflage, while orange serves to highlight urgent commands. Together this contrasting color-scheme compliments its self well, with the khaki green providing a dark backdrop to the shiny orange. There is also a date aperture between the 4 and 5 o’clock positions.
