One of the major providers of optimal aviation watches Bell & Ross hits the market once again in 2018, with these two new offerings: BR03-94 Horolum & BR03-92 Horoblack.
These pieces are named “Horo” as a reference to the Bell & Ross concept of using matt micro blasted steel on the casings and dials, as well as providing a sandwich for an enhanced legibility. Steel blasting is a technique that involves high-pressure spraying of tiny glass beads on the metal’s surface. This treatment “depolishes” the surface giving it a uniform appearance, with a grey tone of high purity. The end result is an anti-reflective matte finish, which avoids reverberations in the sun.
First up we got the “Bell & Ross BR03-92 Horoblack” in a 42mm case made of the aforementioned microblasted steel with a solid case back, which features a small aperture peeking into the mechanical movement. Design wise we have the iconic Bell & Ross circle in a square inspired off of aviation control decks, with exposed screws in each of the four squares corners. Topped by a sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating. Equipped with a setting crown and a water-resistance that can reach up to 100 meters (330 feet).
Time is exhibited on a two overlapping insert dial, similar to the “sandwich” dials found on many Officine Panerai watches. The color scheme is predominantly grey with hour index markers and the Arabic numerals: 3, 6, 9 and 12. It’s composed of an upper insert microblasted with a grey color, while the cut away area around the numerals and hour indexes reveal a black colored lower insert.
The central hands, Arabic numerals and index markers have all undergone a black luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility. There is also a date aperture between the 4 and 5 o’clock positions.

Next up we have the “BR 03-94 Horolum” in a 42mm case made of microblasted steel with the same aforementioned iconic circle in a square design. Also with four exposed screws in each of the square corners and a small aperture on its case back. Topped by a sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating, which assists with water-resistance on this watch reaching up to 100 meters (330 feet).
Time is exhibited on a grey dial with hour index markers and the Arabic numerals: 6 and 12, followed by smaller black printed minute index markers, circling around the dial. There are two sub-dials: a sub-seconds at the 3 o’clock position and a 30-minute counter at the 9 o’clock position. The central hands, sub-seconds hands, Arabic numerals and hour index markers have all undergone a green luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility.
