In the midst of the sunny summer vibes Bell & Ross returns to the horology market with a quite obscure release, dubbed the “Bell & Ross BR- X1 Phantom”. It is not the first skeletonized edition in their BR-X1 collection, essentially this is a follow-up to the “BR-X1 Black Titanium” (Ref#: BRX1-CE-TI-BLC), which we reviewed back in 2017 here. Now let’s take a look at the blackened PVD skeletonized version of this shadowy timepiece.
.Back in 2014 was when Bell & Ross first introduced their now signature BR 01 design, which due to its futuristic aesthetics was able to wide the public perception of this brand beyond the cockpit and a military aviation heritage. Among some of the more memorable timepieces and audacious offering that have sprung from these efforts was the “BR-X1 Hyperstellar” (Ref#: BRX1-AL-TI-BLU), which you can read more about here;
or some of the watches included in the motorsport themed “Renault Sport F1” series, as you can recall here.
Even a tourbillon has seen its way onto some of these watches, made by Bell & Ross to expand the publics perception of what’s yet to come; like in this highly exclusive 20 manufactured pieces only, “BR-X1 Tourbillon White Hawk” (Ref#: BRX1-CHTB-WHC), you can awe it here.
On this new 2019 release the 45mm iconic circle within a square case by Bell & Ross appears here made of black PVD titanium and matte black ceramic rubber inserts. As usual it comes with an exposed screw in each of the four corners. Mounted to the case is a match titanium bezel.
On the flip-side is a solid titanium case-back that has been engraved with technical details and the unique individual number of each of these 250 limited edition pieces. It also includes their characteristic small opening in tinted sapphire crystal, which is centered on the movements balance, for a partial view.
It comes equipped two “rocker” style push-buttons that operate the chronograph functions, while in-between them is a riveted setting-crown engraved with the ampersand “&” of the Bell & Ross logo. These pushers and crown have also been give the matte black ceramic rubber treatment.
All topped off by a sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating, which has also been engraved the Bell & Ross logo directly on the crystal. Water-resistance on this watch can reach up to 100 meters (330 feet).
Time is exhibited on a skeletonized dial with an overall dark black mate color-scheme. It comes with metal applique hour index markers, followed by smaller grey seconds markers and slightly larger for each minute index marker. Also circling around the the periphery of the dial is a tachymeter scale, also printed out in grey preserving the color-scheme There are two sub-dials: a sub-seconds at the 3 o’clock position and a 30-minute counter at the 9 o’clock position.
The central skeletonized metal applique hour and minutes hands, plus the hour index markers have all been filled with a Super-LumiNova®, for an enhanced legibility. A usual feature that is extra appreciated and rendered useful on a watch know for its “Phantom” features. It also includes a date aperture at the 6 o’clock position, which has been given a white background to stand-out and disruptive the predominately dark theme.
