It’s not the first time Bell & Ross research team has come up with astonishing machines rooted in the quest for speed and performance. In 2014 they rolled out the “B-Rocket” motorcycle as an homage to the prototypes of the 1950’s designed to break the swiftest land speed records. More details on two-wheeled machine and its themed watch, can be read here.
Another unique event those attracted by high velocity are drawn to are the “speed trails” races, typical held on the huge salt lake flats of the North American West. Not as popular as Formula 1 or NASCAR competitions, but just as high stakes if not more. Bell & Ross also conceived a vehicle named the “Belly Tanker” along with a timepiece to mark the occasion, you can learn all about following this link here.
Meanwhile in Reno, Nevada is where the most extreme speed competition in the aviation world is held. Created back in 1924, this event brings together aircraft’s flying at full speed at very low altitude, on a closed circuit delineated by 10-meter-high pylons. The co-founder of Bell & Ross, Bruno Belamich has designed this ultramodern single-seat, propeller-engine aircraft built entirely of high-tech materials like: graphite, fiberglass, titanium and aluminum alloy.
The BR-Bird is powered by a V12 Rolls Royce Falcon developed on a Merlin Base. All components designated with names that have legendary status in aviation, particularly thanks to the legendary English Spitfire. This new Bell & Ross timepiece has been conceived as a homage to this competition and their novel BR-Bird aircraft.
The 41mm case is made of satin-polished stainless-steel with a solid case back. Mounted to the case is a steel bezel with anodized blue aluminium ring and tachymeter scale.
Equipped with two-screw in push-pieces that activate the chronograph functions and a screw-down setting crown in-between them, which is tucked away and protected by crown guards. Topped by an ultra-curved sapphire crystal with an anti-reflexive coating that assists with water-resistance on this watch reaching up to 100 meters (330 feet).
Time is exhibited on a white dial with blue Arabic numerals with a minute ring made up of white minute index markers within inter linked blue and grey 5-minute sections. There are two sub-dials: a white sub-seconds with a black hand at the 3 o’clock position; and a 30-minute counter colored black, blue and grey with an orange hand at the 9 o’clock position.
The central metal skeletonized hands have also undergone a luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility. There is also a date aperture inside the sub-seconds dial at the 3 o’clock position that reveals three number at a time with a subtle orange arrow head pointed at the middle and current date.
