Bell & Ross keeps laying more watches down on the ground, after being mainly known for their aviation themed timepieces. They aren’t the first horology brand to break into the Formula One scene. But, one of the few that are included, while paving a route in their own iconic fashion.
They announced their partnership with Renault Sport Formula One Team back in March of 2016 when they released two new watches to mark the occasion, the: “Bell & Ross BR-X1 Chronograph” and “Bell & Ross BR-X1 Tourbillon”. Now they are celebrating Renault’s new F1 race car, the R.S.17, recently unveiled at London’s Royal Horticultural Halls in the presence of the team’s drivers: Jolyon Palmer and Nico Hulkenberg.
The 42mm charismatic Bell & Ross square case is made of a matte black ceramic with a solid case back. Featuring two push-pieces on its right-side to operate the chronograph functions, with the ‘start & stop’ push-button highlighted in a yellow anodized aluminum, providing a more intuitive control to its user. It’s covered by a sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating, which assists in assuring water-resistance on this watch can reach up to 100 meters (330 feet).
Time is exhibited on a carbon-fiber dial with white Arabic numerals. The metal applique numerals and hands have a luminescent coating for enhanced legibility. Plus it includes two sub-dials: a sub-seconds with green accents at the 3 o’clock position and a 30-minute counter with yellow accents at the 9 o’clock position. A ring of white minute index markers can be seen circling around the dial near the bezel; while the indentation where the dial meets the bezel has a yellow highlighted tachymeter scale with Arabic numerals circling around. There is also a round date aperture between the 4 and 5 o’clock positions.
Undoubtedly time is of extreme importance in these racing competitions. One can even say history tends to forget runner-ups, which just adds to the pressure of getting there first. And the assistance of high precision timers is completely essentially to analyzing and comprehending where fundamental improvements or modifications are required. Another horology brand that recently joined the Formula One ranks was Richard Mille with their “50-03 Tourbillon Split Seconds Chronograph Ultralight McLaren F1” made out of innovative materials.
