Although this brand has recently been seen ushering out a series of Formula 1 themed watches for their Renault collaboration. This new release is a clear sign of Bell & Ross re-focusing on the military themed timepieces with which they first established their presence on the horology market.
Among many of the military relations that Bell & Ross has cultivated along the years are some elite units like: GIGN (Special Operations Unit of the French National Gendarmerie) and RAID (Search, Assistance, Intervention and Deterrence Unit of the French National Police Force), both these teams tend to undergo missions requiring strictly timed procedures.
The 42mm case is made of matte black ceramic with the iconic Bell & Ross circle in a square design, reminiscent of airplane cockpit controls. It’s covered by a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating. And water-resistance on this timepiece can reach up to 100 meters (330 feet). As usual a simple, effective case design that continues to build on the brand awareness of Bell & Ross.
Time is exhibited on a black and greyish sandwich dial with a camouflage patterned motif over it and the Arabic numerals 3, 6, 9 and 12. A ring of minute index markers can be seen circling the dial and the “Bell & Ross” logo can be seen under the 12 o’clock positon. Overall a very simple dial with a dark military theme to it. But, the cut away around the numerals and hour index markers, as well as the hands have a black Superluminova coating, for an enhanced legibility. There is also a date aperture between the 4 and 5 o’clock positions.
The so-called “Phantom” concept was originally launched in 2007 and followed up on with the “Commando” collection of 2009. These watch series were designed to fit a professional military milieu, since they were inspired by aeronautical instrumentation. At the time these avant-garde timepieces were among the first to use a camouflage coating in a horological setting, like we see on this current Bell & Ross watching being released now.
