BAPE, the Japanese lifestyle and streetwear brand has selected 25 partners, including Bell & Ross, to celebrate the brand’s much-awaited 25th anniversary. It is their first joint venture and the result are two limited edition classically designed Bell & Ross watches with a trendy “ape” like vibe and one in camouflage.

To further add to the festivities BAPE has enlisted various cult brands to serve as canvases and showcase their brand logo. They’ve actually chosen over 30 major brands ranging from: Adidas, Montblac, Doc Martens, Spalding, Barbie and Swarovski, among many others. From the horology market BAPE has team-up with the “Casio G-shock” model, but Bell & Ross is the only mechanical timepiece in their midst. The renowned military identity that Bell & Ross has established was seen as a common link to BAPE’s emblematic camouflage theme.
This contemporary streetwear brand was found by the pioneering Japanese designer Nigo (Tomoaki Nagao), who chose the term BAPE from a Japanese idiom that loosely translates as “a bathing ape in lukewarm water”, meant as an ironic reference to the “lazy opulence” of the modern consumer culture of Japanese youth. Much of its success was created via hype and a scarce supply of their products, while associating with diverse celebrities mainly in the hip-hop community like: Kanye West, Pharrell, Big Sean, Beastie Boys or even Linkin Park.
Both of these watches come in a 42mm case shaped in the iconic Bell & Ross circle in a square, made out of matt black ceramic with a solid case back that features a special engraving of the BAPE® Ape logo and the unique number of each limited edition piece.
It comes equipped with a setting-crown and features exposed screws in each corner. All around these are solid standard Bell & Ross timepieces, based on the BR03-92 square case. All topped by a sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating, which assists with water-resistance on this watch being able to reach up to 100 meters (330 feet).
The distinguishing differences between these two watches occurs on the dial side of these new pieces. In similar both dials consist of a two-piece construction, the so-called “sandwich” dial which is crafted with an upper section that is cut-out around the numerals and index markers, revealing a lower layer that has been filled with a luminescent coating.
In common both models exhibit time with long hour index markers and the Arabic numerals 3, 9 and 12. At the 6 o’clock position we can see the BAPE® Ape logo also with a luminescent filling, plus the inscription “APES TOGETHER STRONG”. They are also both equipped with the same military style central hands. There is also a date aperture between the 4 and 5 o’clock position. The numerals, index markers, BAPE® Ape logo and tips of the central hands have all undergone a luminescent coating
So, the differences only appear on the overall background of these watches. One model comes in a simple black dial with a green hued luminescence for the aforementioned treated elements; while the other model has a very fitting camouflage pattern, which due to its green patches led Bell & Ross to opt for a white luminescence for these similar elements, thus providing a better contrast an enhanced legibility
