Celebrations for the 40th anniversary of the first Royal Oak made out of precious metal is still underway, as they release a new iteration of this timeless classic. SIHH 2017 will set the stage to introduce the new: “Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Ultra-Thin Jumbo”.
For certain aficionados of this historic brand and especially this iconic Gérald Genta designed model. The wait to be able to acquire it in yellow gold has been a long one. This AP reference 15202 was only made available to the public back in 2012, in a stainless-steel and an 18k rose gold version. And since its debut has been one of the company’s best-sellers.
There actually was an 18k yellow gold version of this watch with a dark green dial, released on the horology market before in a limited edition of only 50 produced pieces, for “The Hour Glass” anniversary, in 2015. Though nowadays many Asian countries deal with luxury retail goods, “The Hour Glass” with 40 boutiques in nine key cities, have pioneered much of the awareness and appreciation for the horological culture throughout the Asia Pacific region.
The 39mm case is made of 18k yellow gold with a transparent caseback that allows to see the inner workings of this slim and iconic movement. And all the other standard traits of a modern day classic that doesn’t require any tweaking. Like its attached bezel, with eight exposed screws; or its screw-down crown with the AP logo on it. And topped off by a glareproofed sapphire crystal, which assists in keeping this timepiece water-resistant up to 50m (164 feet).
There are two different tapisserie guilloché colored dials available for this model: either a blue one, or a gold-colored one. Time is told via 18k yellow gold applied hour index markers and hands, which all have a luminescent coating for enhanced legibility. There is also a date aperture at the 3 o’clock position; and the AP logo can be seen at the 6 o’clock spot, which is a hallmark callback to the original “A-Series” Royal Oak.
