Back in November 2016 Audemars Piquet enlisted the craftsmanship of the famous jewelry designer, Carolina Bucci. Her contributions would result in the dazzling “Royal Oak Frosted Gold” watch that was made available in either white gold or pink gold. Audemars Piguet now returns to market with a very special limited edition, mirror dialed version.
This new model is dedicated to Carolina Bucci herself. The first model she conceived that gained her much deserved accolades from Audemars Piguet came in the form of the dazzling “Audemars Piguet Frosted Gold Ladies’ Royal Oak (Ref#: 15451OR.GG.1259OR.03), which you can read more about here. It was made available in either 18k white gold or rose gold with two different cases to choose from: 33 or 37mm. It kept the original Gérald Genta design intact, but innovated by using the unique hammered down gold finish that can still be seen on this updated version.
The 37mm case has now been made available in 18k yellow gold with the unique frosted coating. On the flipside it has sapphire exhibition case back, which allows to view the inner workings of the mechanical movement.
Mounted to the case is a matching 18k yellow gold frosted bezel with 8 exposed screws, preserving the aforementioned original Gérald Genta design.
So, in essence this is identical to the previous 2016 edition. Carolina Bucci has once again relied on the unique hammered down gold finish, but has swapped rose and white for yellow good. It also comes equipped with a screw-in setting crown and is all topped by a glare-proofed sapphire crystal, which combined assist with water-resistance on this watch being able to reach up to 50 meters (164 feet).
Time is exhibited on the silver-toned dial with 18k yellow gold applied hour index markers, followed by smaller black printed minute index markers. Besides these elements it features the brand “AUDEMARS PIGUET” inscribed on the upper-half of the dial, “AUTOMATIC” on the lower-half and “SWISS MADE” at the 6 o’clock position. The 18k yellow gold central hands and hour index markers have been fitted with a luminescent filling, for an enhanced legibility. It also includes a date aperture at the 3 o’clock position.
Even though the dial has a subtle grey hue, the most unique aspect is the mirror effect. In the words of the designer herself the idea was conceived “When I was considering this new watch, I wanted to create a dynamic contrast of surfaces and settled on the idea of taking the tapisserie dial in the opposite direction towards pure reflection, says Carolina Bucci. “I was drawn to drawn to the idea of the appearance of no surface at all, like when you see a calm lake framed by nothing but trees and the sky… the water almost disappears.”
