There are many watches featuring a moon-phase, but they tend to be stuffed away amongst other complications. So, it’s quite stunning to see Arnold & Son release a watch that contains not just one of the biggest moon-phases, but two of them! This “Royal Collection” is inspired by the earlier part of John Arnold’s life and is a homage to the timepieces he conceived for King George III and other members of the royal court. This new “Arnold & Son HM Double Hemisphere Perpetual Moon” is an evolution of the “HM Perpetual Moon” that was released in 2013.

The guilloché dial that came in black on the 2013 edition is now a better suited blue, with golden stars and constellations for realism and detailed elegance. This dial has a translucent blue lacquered guilloché and another translucent blue lacquered guilloché disc with a golden moon and stars. Also features fine circular graining with rhodium treatment and depictions of the 8 phases of the moon. Time is indicated by red gold index markers and the red gold hands pointing at them.

A small world map is located at the 3 o’clock position with an equator line cutting the world in half and two separate arrows pointing out the Northern and Southern part. This eliminates any possible confusion in relation to the two moon-phases. The first aperture positioned between the 10 and 2 o’clock positon exhibit the Moonphase as seen in the Northern hemisphere; while the Southern hemisphere positioned between the 4 and 8 o’clock mimics the northern half. The only thing that changes in the portrayal of the moon-phases are the constellations you can see in them.

Also worth mentioning is the fact that the Moonphase is not bolted on top, but rather fully integrated with the movement. Which is why you set the two front moons by adjusting the third moon located on the caseback. For this third moon is not just for show, it serves to set the other two and also features a pointer dial for a more precise legibility.

The 42mm case is made of 18k red gold and covered by a cambered sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on both sides. Water-resistance on this timepiece can reach up to 30 meters (100 feet). The exhibition caseback allows to marvel at the movement which features a rhodium treated with Haute Horlogerie finishing and manually chamfered bridges with polished edges. Other embellishing details include: fine circular graining and Côtes de Genève rayonnantes, blued screws with beveled and mirror-polished heads.
