Although they had updated their “Lange 1” model in 2015, A. Lange & Söhne has now gone further by rethinking their Moonphase and adding a day/night indicator, in this new version for SIHH 2017.

The 38.5 case is available in either: 18k white gold, 18k pink gold or a platinum version. Besides the materials applied their other details are all identical.

They all have a transparent caseback that allows to view the inner working of the mechanical movement. There is a push-button that allows you to advance the date, on the cases outer side, near the 10 o’clock mark. Also features long sculpted lugs that were screwed on the case-band, for a nice comfortable wrist fit and a screw-down crown.

Time is exhibited on a black, white or rhodium dial. In common they all have the off-set dials: a central time with a mixture of Roman numerals and hour index markers, close to the 9 o’clock position; and a small sub-seconds with their newly conceived Moonphase, aligned with the 5 o’clock position. There is also a double window date aligned with the 1 o’clock position. And an inconspicuous hand pointing out along the 2 to 5 o’clock positions, serves to indicate the amount of power reserve left in the watch.

Moon phases have been around for quite some time, but A. Lange & Söhne have given it a more realistic manner. Their innovation was to use two separate discs in order to represent the Moonphase; and in doing so they have managed to also provide a more accurate representation and include another informative element.

The Moonphase display uses a celestial disc painted half blue and the other half includes a star lit sky; over this disc another separate solid-gold moon disc pursues its orbit, with the blue sky or star lit sky in the background. So, during the day the disc shows a bright sky and at night we see a dark sky with gorgeously contrasting laser-cut stars. And besides the beauty of it A Lange & Söhne ingeniously use the background to also double as a day/night indicator.
