Jaeger-LeCoultre co-created and sponsors the “Filmmaker in Residence” initiative, since 2013, with the collaboration of New York City and the New York Film Festival (NYFF), in order to support filmmakers at an early stage of their creative process. Athina Tsangari is the third annual Filmmaker in Residence to be selected and will develop her project during the 53rd New York Film Festival.
Athina Tsangari obtained her BA in Comparative Literature, Philosophy, and Drama from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, in Greece. It was after her graduation that she arrived at Austin, Texas to study film directing. And as luck would have it, she stumbled upon a small role in Richard Linklater’s debut film “Slacker”, back in 1991. This collaboration would lead her on to participate in other Linklater projects, as he himself kept coming up in the film industry. And 2013 saw her get credited as co-producer on “Before Midnight”, the conclusion to Richard Linklater’s love/relationship trilogy between the actors Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy. But, not before first having concluded her own feature-film “Attenberg”, in 2010, which would be Greece’s Foreign Language Film submission for the 2012 Academy Awards. And also producing a series of feature and short films from Greece, as well as US productions.
As this year’s recipient of the “Film Society of Lincoln Center and Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Filmmaker in Residence”, Tsangari will be developing a screwball action-thriller, called: “White Knuckles” that dwells over two criminal sisters that play a burglar and a bookkeeper, venturing into fraud, forced entry’s, love tangles and fast-paced fist blows. Much of the action on this future film will be located in New York City, which is something that delights Athina, as she gets to interact more with the New York film community. A great year she’s having so far, which also saw her latest feature “Chevalier” premiere in August, at the Locarno Film Festival, in Italy.
The best film festivals around the world, from: San Sebastian, Shanghai, Toronto, Venice to LA and NY, have enjoyed the support of Jaeger-LeCoultre. For the past decade the 180 year old watch-manufacture has proudly been awarding glory and prizes to novice and seasoned filmmakers. Through supporting the preservation of film and a multi-year partnership which also includes: the Annual Chaplin Award Gala (given to Robert Redford this year) and the now running 17-day celebration of some of the best films produced in 2015 around the world, at the New York Film Festival.
