TAG Heuer had already gained a heighten notoriety due to their flamboyant CEO Jean-Claude Biver, but they went and added another flashy character in the form of Alex Monopoly. He has designed a couple of highly limited edition for their watch collection and recently added this”TAG Heuer Formula 1 Alec Monopoly Special Edition”.
The L.A. guerrilla graffiti artist Alec Monopoly, whose real name is Alec Andon, began to receive more notoriety due to his murals, gallery installation and especially his street art graffiti with the iconic mustachioed top hat wearing banker form the classic Hasbro board game, Monopoly.
But, Alec’s fixation on the “Monopoly Banker” does not just apply to some of his artwork. The artist himself has also cultivated a certain degree of anonymity, by wearing a top hat and mask partially covering his face. He began his most celebrated activity back in 2008, during the great collapse of the world economy and the times of the “Occupy Wall Street” movement.
The 41mm case is made of stainless-steel with a mixture of fine-brushed and polished steel with solid steel case back. Mounted to the case is a sandblasted steel black PVD coated unidirectional turning bezel with a 60-minute scale engraving.
It also comes equipped with a steel black PD coated setting-crown.
On its flip-side the stainless steel case back has been engraved with word “ALEC” as a direct reference to the aforementioned “artist provocateur” known as Alec Monopoly. The case is topped by a sapphire crystal that assists with water-resistance being able to reach up to 200 meters (656 feet).
Time is exhibited on an Alec Monopoly decorated dial, hence this timepieces moniker and raison d’être. Since, being hired by Jean-Claude Biver this street-artist has been spreading his artistic guerrilla aesthetics all over TAG Heuer in a commissioned manner.
On this latest timepiece Alec Monopoly has used the white canvas of the dial to continue the theme he has presented on previous editions. Here we find the Alex caricature (who is designed to be reminiscent of the character “Milburn Pennybags”, from the iconic Hasbro board game Monopoly) holding a green dollar bill, with a couple of more bills scattered around the dial. While in the background we can see the name “ALEC” applied with a dripping-paint look in yellow, blue and red.
To unburden the Alec Monopoly’s artwork, we find the “TAG HEUER FORMULA 1” inscription applied to the sapphire crystal. To assist with reading time there is a black inner flange, circling the dial with white minute index markers and double-digit numerals for every five-minute increment. The stainless-steel central hands have been fitted with a luminescent filling, for an enhanced legibility. There is also a white date aperture at the 3 o’clock position, cutting into the aforementioned Alex caricatures top hat.
